Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insisted the referee was to blame for his side’s defeat to Chelsea in the Community Shield.

The champions took the lead early in the match through Nani only for Ricardo Carvalho to equalise.

However, Frank Lampard then put Chelsea ahead with a goal that Ferguson insisted should not have been given due to a foul by Michael Ballack on Patrice Evra in the build up.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Scot insisted that the second goal had cost his side the win.

“The referee, I think he saw it, he clearly saw it, he’s elbowed him in the face,” said Sir Alex.
“He’s clearly in line with the actual incident and I’m disappointed because he stopped the game twice before that for fouls when players were lying down.
“But that incident cost us the game really.”

Wayne Rooney then equalised for Manchester United in stoppage time but Ferguson insisted his side should have had the game won in the first half
“We should have put it to bed in the first half,” he explained.
“The equaliser was a poor goal from our point of view I think we should have defended it better but Chelsea at that point came into the game and were controlling the game.”
“The second goal, as you saw, should not have been allowed.”

As the game finished all square, the Community Shield was decided on penalties which Chelsea won 4-1.
